Autumn is upon us!

We have been really busy here at Stitchers Heaven since Heart of Cross Stitch.  During the festival so many new people discovered the shop that my mailing list has doubled!!!!  And it seems everyone is busy stocking up on projects for the winter, so we have been busy helping you out with your stitching needs.  If you haven’t seen all the new stuff yet, please come into the shop and take a look.  The highlights are listed below.  As usual, there are too many new items to list them all!!!

New designers in the shop:

·          Earth Threads designed by Betsy Stinner is a new designer to Stitchers Heaven and Des Moines.  Betsy taught at Heart of Cross Stitch in Des Moines for the first time this year.  Her work is stunning and beautiful using a combination of cross stitch and specialty stitches.  She uses mainly DMC fibers but occasionally uses Thread Gathers silks or Caron Collection Threads for accent.  I have many, many of her designs in the shop and already have 3 models stitched and on the wall.  Stop in to check these out!!!!

·          Calico Crossroads is also a new designer to Stitchers Heaven.  They are the designers of those cute cats that always get in trouble (mainly black and white pictures with just a little splash of color).  They also have some other designs that would be of interest to those of you who like something a little more challenging – but not difficult.  They have 2 designs on linen using DMC and Kreinik metallics that look like counted canvas work.  Also, they have a needle roll design and scissor fob design which each have a picture of two loving cats surrounded by other stitches.  They also have a Christmas Hardanger heart and some cute little Christmas stockings, which feature specialty stitches.  WAY, WAY COOL!

·          Thea Gouvernour (from Holland) has some very elegant samplers including a Wedding sampler, and a couple of “redwork” samplers.  These are very Victorian looking and are all cross stitch.

·          Cross stitch adaptations of the artwork of Marjolein Bastin include several charts and kits of the beauty of nature – birds, butterflies, gardens and fruit.  These include “Summer Fruit” (a fruit basket with tiny birds and butterflies), “No Vacancy” (three bird houses with occupants), “Spring Joy” (a watering can with strawberries and a cute little bird), “The Four Seasons” (a spot sampler with various images of nature which could be done as a whole or each image could be done individually on a pillow or towel), “Spring in the Garden” (another spot sampler with various images of spring),   “Meadow Dance” (a field of wildflowers with many butterflies flitting about), “The Pecking Order” (a feeder trough with many birds eating and interacting with each other), and many more designs that come as kits.

·          Full Circle Designs is a new design company and has some wonderful designs including “Twas a Starry Christmas Night” (a beautiful Christmas sampler), and 4 designs called “Creature Comforts” which have an animal (rabbit, bee, squirrel or dragonfly) in the corners with a border utilizing some simple specialty stitches surrounding some small, related pictures.  These would make great pillows or wall hangings and include a chart for a scissor fob.

New items in the shop include the newest patterns and kits from:

·          Heart In Hand’s new Monthly Manias for November and December have arrived.

·          Lizzie Kate’s new designs should be in the shop soon.

·          Bent Creek’s new Zipper Kit, “Christmas” should arrive soon after the 10th of November.

·          Shepherd’s Bush’s kits have arrived!!!  These include “Blackberie Sampler”, “Wandering Shepherd”, “In My Garden (Needle) Roll”, “In My Garden (Scissor) Fob” (includes the scissors), and “Shepherd’s Hill”.  I also received the “Millennium Sampler” and “Millennium Needle Roll”.

·          The Heart’s Content’s (Maureen Appleton) new kits include 2 needle rolls (“Hope” and “Virtue”) which are stitched on linen banding (I am currently stitching “Hope”); “Lily & Laurel” a sampler with a beautiful lily, a house with 2 trees, the word harmony, and the sayings “Peace abides in a contented heart”, “Everyone is nearest to his own self” with other exquisite details as only Maureen can design;  “Kindred Spirits” with flowers, fruits and plants – this one is small – approximately 3” x 5” stitched on 29 count Glenshee (of course); and “Borgota Iris” beautiful iris blooms using Australian Gumnut Silk.  I have also received a new shipment of the “2000 Annual Ornament” kit, which has flown out of the shop each time I have gotten it in.  Maureen will also be sending out more new kits in November.

·          Dimples (Terrence Nolan) designs have been restocked.  New designs from Market include “Queen of the Bumblebees” (limited edition), “Orchid Bee” (limited edition), “Haiku” (a little bird resting on a flowered twig), “Lady Slipper Orchid”, and “Let’s Hear It For The Ladies” (a table topper featuring lady bugs – very charming).

·          The Nostalgic Needle (Sharon Cohen) has over 18 new designs that have come into the shop this week including several new purses/sweet bags, new ornaments, new samplers and new blackwork designs.

·          The Victoria Sampler has 50 new kits to help you learn new stitching techniques called “Beyond Cross Stitch”.  There are 5 different levels (specialty counted stitches, silk ribbon embroidery, surface embroidery stitches, pulled thread stitches and Hardanger) with 10 different kits (lessons) per level.  Check these out!!!

·          Donna Kooler’s Encyclopedia of Needlework.  This is a new book showing how to do different and exciting stitches in many different techniques.  This book is spectacular with hundreds of color photographs!  It has sections for needlepoint, embroidery and counted thread.  Each section has some history and background information, describing tools, fibers and fabric used.  Each stitch has a stitch diagram, shows what the stitch would look like on fabric (sometimes the back of the stitch is also shown!), any special stitching tips and how the stitch should be used.  There are also projects in the book for each section designed by leaders in each technique (Barbara Baatz, Mary Polityka Bush, Nancy Rossi, Diane Clements, Linda Gillum, Linda Abel, and Rae Iverson).  The only drawback to this book is that it is not spiral bound.  This is truly a MUST HAVE for your needlework resource library.  As I know many of you would like this book, I will keep one copy in the shop for you to look at.  I will take orders for this book over the next 2 weeks (through November 15th) and place an order on the 16th.  The cost for this book is $24.95.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

A new phase for Stitchers Heaven

I have decided that I will be returning to the work force as a Computer/Analyst Contract Programmer.  I will be working for various companies doing computer programming on a part-time basis.  In order for me to do this, I have hired a couple of people to work in the shop while I am out.  Please stop in and introduce yourselves to these courteous and knowledgeable people.

Paula Becker will be manning the shop during the day Monday thru Thursday from 9am – 3pm.  She has several years stitching experience and her knowledge of the stitching industry is very extensive.  She is very well informed about designers, fabrics and fibers and will be able to help you out with her vast knowledge and experience.

Sheila Tomlinson will be working various evening and weekend hours.  She has experience with various stitching techniques including Hardanger and needlepoint.  She is very helpful and knowledgeable about the products we carry at Stitchers Heaven.

Both Paula and Sheila will be able to provide you with the pleasant helpfulness you’ve come to expect at Stitchers Heaven.  I have complete faith in their abilities to serve you well!!!

Another new phase for Stitchers Heaven

This has to deal with advertising…  Check out my ad running on KRNT radio (1350 AM) in sponsorship of “The Jazzman”.  This is a program that plays some wonderful jazz on Sunday evenings from 6 – 7.  Various ads will be running through the month of November as well as before and after “The Jazzman”.

Also, beginning November 13th, I will have a commercial running during the evening on PAX TV – channel 39 (Des Moines Cable channel 10) thru the middle of December.  This was fun to film and I look forward to seeing the finished result.  Paula, Sheila and I were all filmed for the commercial, so you will have a chance to see the new Stitchers Heaven’s angels on TV!

Tell your friends to watch and listen…

Until next month, Happy Stitching!!!   Steven
